KULOB, October 27, 2011, Asia-Plus — New type of earnings – voluntary “sex migration” of young women from Tajikistan to Afghanistan – has been reported by officers from the police station in Shouroobod district, Khatlon province.

“Over the past nine months, our officers have detained eight women who were returning from Afghanistan,” Lieutenant-Colonel Azimjon Omurzoqov, the deputy chief of the Shouroobod police station, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, the detained women are mostly from Kulob region, “but there are also women from other regions of the country.”

“It is quite possible that it is not the first experience of sex migration, because we have arranged an operational work on the contiguous territory just recently,” Omurzoqov noted.

He added that commercial sex workers (CSWs) usually got in touch with clients by mobile phone and then illegally crossed the border river.
